IATSE 480 member since 2004. Although, I prefer to work on low budget productions, as it’s much more of a collaborationOver the years, I’ve sort of become the “Catastrophe set builder”.
"I once asked Joel Sisson how to describe his process. He responded: "I just love imagineering, the act of leveraging my skills as an engineer to actualize something creative in my imagination." I had known before this response that Joel was an incredible person - his kindness and empathy emanated from him so powerfully - but it was in that moment that I knew he'd be a creative collaborator for life.
The project that we worked on together was arguably the most complex set build in the history of independent film. It involved several engineers, across multiple states, and required the leadership of someone with the gumption, managerial experience, engineering expertise and imagination of the highest caliber. That person was Joel, and he enabled us to build not only one, but TWO, grain bin sets for the feature film SILO (Oscilloscope Laboratories) inside of an airplane hangar. It was ambitious. It was improbable. And, at times, seemingly impossible. But Joel got it done, and made it look easy, and the quality of the work enabled us to reach incredible heights artistically and professionally.

These were such important stories of tragedy and triumph, I felt honored to be a part of it.
It’s very important for me to be as accurate as we can with these types of catastrophe sets. Peoples lives were lost and others deeply affected. We try to honor that with each build.
